Mangalista Pork Breed History

Here is a more detailed history of the Mangalitsa pig:

  • 1833: Archduke Joseph Anton Johann of Austria, the Palatine of Hungary, received some Sumadija pigs from a Serbian prince. He then crossed these pigs with Bakony and Szalonta pigs to create the Mangalitsa breed.
  • 1850-1950: The Mangalitsa breed became very popular in Europe during this time period. The pigs were prized for their delicious meat and their thick, curly coat of hair, which helped to keep them warm in cold weather.
  • 1950-1990: The popularity of the Mangalitsa breed declined during this time period. This was due to a number of factors, including the introduction of new breeds of pigs that were more efficient to raise, and the rise of factory farming.

  • 1990s: The Mangalitsa breed was nearly lost to extinction in the 1990s. There were only a few hundred Mangalitsa pigs left in the world at this time.
  • 2000s: The Mangalitsa breed has made a comeback in the 2000s. This is due to the growing interest in heritage breeds of livestock, and the increasing demand for high-quality pork.

Today, the Mangalitsa breed is once again a popular choice for farmers and consumers. Mangalitsa pigs are raised on small farms all over the world, and their meat is sold in specialty markets.
